Merits of Capitalism

Short explanation

Capitalism in its core works by a very powerful principle: one gets rewarded for solving other people’s problems. For the capitalist industrialised countries this has resulted in tremendous progress, including: improved health care, education, nutrition, general prosperity and a plunge in child mortality.

It's important that this powerful capitalist principle will be retained or even further strengthened. Communal capitalism aims at significant reform of the capitalist system design, but we don’t want to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Elaborate explanation

When capitalism came to being during the industrial revolution, it was designed to solve the problems of that time: problems of scarcity. There was more demand for products than supply. There was a need for better nutrition, health care, education, and overall prosperity. Capitalism has been tremendously successful in achieving this for all the countries, without exception, that adopted industrialized capitalism.

Capitalism worked and most people were satisfied with it because the system rewarded those who solved the problems for the common good, which came down to solving the problem of shortage. This powerful principle of capitalism is one we want to retain: rewarding you for solving the problems of others or the common good.

Today, unfortunately, capitalism too often rewards the wrong efforts. It rewards people who profit excessively at the expense of the things that are deeply important for the long term survival of humanity: including the air we breathe, the land we eat from, and the water we drink.

All the while capitalism in its current form has proven to distribute wealth so equally among the population that it is threatening the ability of different groups in society to live together harmoniously. As an example, because of cost increases one person might need to limit the number of meals he can eat on a day, while those cost increases result in even higher profits for the most wealthy: the corporations shareholders. This disparity leads to a deep sense of separation to both sides.

We need to redesign capitalism to ensure that what is profitable is good for the people once again. This can be achieved with the introduction of Communal Capitalism. With Communal Capitalism, the harm done to nature is directly priced into the price of goods and services. Because corporations will want to reduce their costs in order to increase their profits, they will innovate much more in a sustainable direction. This directly serves the common good: Communal Capitalism rewards corporations who prevent destruction of nature.
